Challenging Discussions 1 | Drug and Alcohol Addiction

If your loved one is dealing with a drug or alcohol addiction, it’s crucial that you communicate with them as soon as possible. As soon as you realize that they have a problem, sit down and talk to them about it. Next, you’ll need to bring the rest of the family into the picture. Talking to your family about their addiction won’t be easy, but it’s the first step towards helping them on their path to recovery. When talking to the family, be sure to maintain a calm and inviting atmosphere. This will help to avoid conflict. Just remember when facing these types of challenging discussions with family to be paitent and forthcoming.

Challenging Discussions 2 | Sexual Orientation

This can be one the most challenging discussions you might encounter. If you’re worried about talking to your family about your sexual orientation, it might help to start slowly. Sit down with just one or two of your family members that you know will be supportive of you. Once you’ve helped them to understand and they’re ready to support you, it will be time to sit down with the rest of your family. Remember that you’re not looking for their permission, just their support and understanding.

Challenging Discussions 3 | Unplanned Pregnancy

If you’re dealing with an unplanned pregnancy, it’s time to sit down and make a plan. This is an essential first step in talking to your family. Once you have an idea of what you want to do, gather your family for a group discussion. Present as much information as you can about the decision you’ve reached. That way, your family will know that you’ve given your decision lots of thought and consideration. Whether or not your family is supportive, there are still resources out there to help you through your pregnancy. It’s obviously ideal to have familial support, but if you’re on your own, just know you don’t have to be alone.

Challenging Discussions 4 | Life-Threatening Illness

If you’re facing a life-threatening illness, you’ll need to sit your family down to very challenging discussions of the details of the illness. It’s important to remember that they’ll have a lot of questions about your diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment options. Before you sit down with your family, try to do as much research as possible about your illness. That way, you’ll be able to answer the questions they might have. If possible, arrange to have a small family meeting with your personal physician. Your doctor will be able to help with the questions that you might not have answers to.

Don’t let fear keep you from communicating with your family. Use the tips provided above to help you talk to your family about some of the most challenging discussions you may face.
