General Unemployment Requirements

To be entitled to benefits, you must be out of work due to no fault of your own. You must be physically able to work. You must be actively seeking work. You must be ready to accept work. It is important to understand the qualification guidelines and necessary actions around each of these requirements.

Residents that are currently unemployed or working part-time can apply for UI benefits (you cannot apply for unemployment insurance if you are still currently employed). Self-employment does not usually qualify for UI benefits coverage.

Unemployment Benefit Guide Checklist

Be prepared and have the following items and information handy before you apply for unemployment: (1) your name and Social Security number, (2) your mailing and residence address (if different), (3) your telephone number, (4) Last employer information, including name, address (mailing and physical location) and telephone number, (5) information on all employers you worked for during the 18 months prior to filing your claim, including name, period of employment, wages earned and how paid, (6) your driver’s license or ID card number, if you have either, (7) last date worked and the reason you are no longer working and (8) citizenship status (which may include your alien registration number).
